According to the All India Survey on Higher Education 2020-21, the combined enrolment in mechanical (6.1 lakh), electricals (3.7 lakh) and civil (4.8 lakh) was 14.6 lakh compared to 11.1 lakh in computer engineering. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are premier institutes. The enrolments for core disciplines have been low. Still, the change is very structural in nature. However, as India’s engineering education is IT-centric, the uptick in offers for mechanical or electrical engineers may not have a significant impact on the total placement numbers.

Early trends suggest there is a spike in campus recruitment from core engineering disciplines. While the transition is still on, the job done so far has started impacting the economy, including in the most critical and contentious area of employment generation. Increasing manufacturing activities were part of the agenda.

The Indian economy has undergone rapid structural changes over the last decade.
